Nokia 8110- Review

Should we welcome back this old favourite? Or leave it as a sweet memory?

Available from £69.99

A blast from the past yet again from HMD Global, dropping another feature phone many have loved on the public. But is that what the 8110 should have been? A sweet memory that should stay as one? We say ‘yes’ unless you really can’t afford to lug a smartphone around a music festival or through a jungle.

We couldn’t help but feel love for the design. It’s simple with comfortable edges that easily glides into your pocket. However, I would be cautious about dropping the 8110 – it’s not that resilient and saw a few scuffs after a week’s use. You can forget about sliding the phone coolly and effortlessly like Neo from the Matrix to accept a call with this version of the 8110, as the Matrix version was customised with a spring. But it would have been great if that was included here. The plastic body is slippery and requires a prerequisite struggle for a one hand slide. We wouldn’t recommend doing it – you’ll drop it. What we did like is the loudspeaker which can be a bit muffled when pushed to max volume but does the job for a hands-free call. Speaking off speakerphone was very good.

What the manufacturer says:

reloading the legendary Nokia 8110, this 4G feature phone comes complete with the iconic curved slider design, giving you the chance to switch off, have fun and relax in the knowledge that all your smartphone essentials are there when you need them. With a familiar and easy-to-use interface, it features intuitive tactile mechanics, with slide to answer and end calls, as well as an addictive helicopter-style spin on its axis. Nokia 8110 comes with the craftsmanship you expect from a Nokia phone, delivering durability and reliability as standard. Nokia 8110 delivers crystal-clear VoLTE calling and is perfect for anyone who wants an iconic 4G feature phone or a companion phone. With access to an app store, for favourites like Google Assistant, Google Search, Google Maps, Facebook and Twitter, send and receive emails or import your contacts and sync your calendar with Outlook and Gmail. To keep it running flawlessly, the Nokia 8110 features the Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform. And yes, it comes with a revamped version of Snake.

What We Say:

If you’re a hardened smartphone user – as most people are – you won’t be using feature phones like the 8110 much unless you’re off somewhere that requires it. A key aspect of feature phones is the battery life and the 8110 does well in this department. It won’t last for days on end like Nokia phones of years ago because it has a colour screen, 4G connection and only 1,500mAh battery life. But it will stand up for two days and a bit because you simply won’t be on it as much as you would be on the smartphone you would no doubt take along if where you were going was okay for it. As a companion phone, the 8110 is ideal, with its unique design and lightweight. There were moans at first about the 8110 having cheap plastic in its construction, but you can’t argue the price point and the fact that it’s a companion phone. Who would pay over the odds for a secondary device that’s not vital? 4G is an interesting inclusion as we didn’t really do anything with the 8110 that required 4G, apart from test out a YouTube video. We never did that again. For those looking for an emergency device that won’t break the bank and is a bit of fun, look no further.
