OUYA announces $60 12-month subscription fee for access to entire library, sells out in 5 hours

Since the release of the OUYA games console a little over a year ago, there’s not been much to shout about. What once looked to be a bright future for console gaming instead turned out to be little more than essentially an Android gaming box with some limited media functionality.

That said, we love mobile gaming, and there are some mobile-exclusive games which are absolute must plays – not to mention countless ports of desktop indie hits or arcade classics. In fact OUYA  has 800 of them, and it’s made them all available to play for one flat subscription fee of $60. If we weren’t paying attention to the OUYA before, we are now.

The ‘OUYA All-Access Pass’ went online earlier today, and just five hours later has already sold out. It looks like we weren’t the only ones intrigued. There seems to be very few catches, too, although one important question does linger over the nature of the subscription. This $60 fee is very much presented as a 12-month pass, so what happens to your games at the end of the year? Do you lose them from the library, or do you simply lose the ability to download games for free?

Purchasing games for free may be a more accurate description, as you actually have to buy the games individually at a cost of $0.00. Still, whichever way you slice it, $5-a-month for the entire 800-game OUYA library is a damn fine deal. Almost enough to make you want to go out and buy the console itself, if the offer were still available.

If you are interested all is not lost – simply head over to OUYA’s site (linked to as the source below) and you can sign up to a mailing list to be notified when the offer comes around again.
