Goodbye Nexus, hello Google smartphone?

Rumours have been mentioned about a Google manufactured smartphone for a while, but now something substantial has popped up about the Google smartphone.

We all know and love the Nexus lines, the Nexus 6P is currently one of our favourite devices and the Nexus 5X proved to be popular with a well received debut. Google could now be shaking things up a bit by manufacturing their own smartphone. Apple as we know has been doing it since the conception of the iPhone line, proving to be optimised marvels.

According to The Telegraph, Google are in talks with mobile operators in regards to releasing their own phone, “sources familiar with the discussions” revealed.

Sources also claimed the new Google smartphone will be released later this year, timeline wise it fits as the Nexus 6P was released last year in September.

Google Smartphone – stopping the fragmentation

Google created the Android operating system, running on over 50 percent of devices in the UK. Manufacturing traditionally is left to third party manufacturers, creating excellent devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5.

By having such an open ended operating system, fragmentation is prevalent providing slightly tweaked Android experiences. Apple has proven with devices developed to cater to the OS, fundamentals such as performance can be carried out to an extremely high level, without the need for powerful processors.

Speaking to The Telegraph, CCS Insight analyst, Ben Wood said “they are concerned that Android is fragmenting, that it needs to become a more controlled platform. I think they’ll seek to control it more, more like Apple.”

Google won’t be closing the Android ecosystem to other manufacturers, but if the rumours prove true, Google could create a device that can be the de facto choice for Android users, when going for an upgrade. The likes of Samsung and LG will continue to apply their own skin to Android, offering features that aren’t found on stock Android, continuing their appeal (e.g multi-window on TouchWiz, which was later adopted by stock Android).

Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed there will be two new Nexus devices next year, so we could be seeing more clutter in the Android smpartphone space.
