Samsung Galaxy S5 smashes T-Mobile’s pre-registration record

Whilst the Samsung Galaxy S5’s revelation at the Mobile World Congress earlier this week may have underwhelmed the techies and journalists present, the people who really matter – the customers – seem to have had the exact opposite reaction.

Last night the CMO of T-Mobile USA Mike Sievert revealed that the company had received over 100,000 pre-registrations for Samsung’s latest flagship handset – that’s a new company record.

It should be noted that ‘pre-registrations’ do not equal pre-orders. Just what they are is actually pretty vague, with T-Mobile describing it as ‘consumer interest’. Even so, the fact that potential customers are willing to register to keep updated on the handset is pretty interesting – it’s not much of a stretch to imagine that a sizeable number of those registered will end up pre-ordering or purchasing the handset.

Not that Samsung will have been particularly worried about sales, despite the lukewarm reception at MWC. Samsung’s brand has grown so exponentially that their dominance is now reaching levels usually reserved only for Apple. Even with fairly minor adjustments to their annual offering, it seems they can still expect the handset to become the market leader.

The device should be available in the UK on April 11th for £599.99. That’s no pittance – to find out whether upgrading is right for you then make sure to pick up next month’s issue of What Mobile Magazine, in stores March 13th.
