Galaxy S4 gains wireless charging capability through add-on accessory

The Galaxy S4 has been the jack of all trades, but did lack one piece of functionality, and that’s wireless charging.

Back at the S4’s New York unveiling in March, the company did promise that it was coming through a special wireless charging expansion kit, but we haven’t heard anything since — until today.

Samsung has finally released the kit which features a special inductive charging enabled battery cover to replace the one that came with the phone. Once on the device, the cover will then allow you to cut the cables and charge your phone using any Qi wireless charging bases.

Those of you wanting the official S4 charging pad will have the option to cough up $49.99 (about £32) for the privilege, whilst the back cover will set you back $39.99 (about £25).

If you’re looking for a bargain, then Droid-life is currently offering the entire kit for a mere $80.95 (about £52) — and they even ship internationally.

Samsung isn’t the first company to sell wireless charging separately, with Nokia placing the wireless charging component into the cover rather than the phone — although Samsung’s option should add less bulk than Nokia’s alternative.
