Apple put an end to obsessive rumours yesterday, pulling back the curtain on the newest member of the iPhone family – the iPhone 5c.

The reveal at the company’s California headquarters went along the lines of what we expected.

The 5c, the first offshoot of the iPhone brand, is designed as a more affordable entry into the market, boasting a 4-inch Retina display, the A6 chip, an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera and running on iOS7, the latest version of the company’s operating system. All of this is wrapped up in a hard-coated polycarbonate design that’s available in blue, green, pink, yellow and white. On top of that a range of cases were shown off, which can be ordered along with the phone itself.

Spec-wise the phone isn’t measuring up to the iPhone 5s, the other device revealed at the event, but that’s reflected in the price – expect to pay   £469 for the 16GB model and £549 for the 32GB one. That’s not exactly as budget priced as the company would like you to think it is. It will of course be cheaper under contract, but it’s still not even close to what’s on offer with the company’s competitors.

If you opt for the iPhone 5c’s 32GB model, then you’ll be paying as much as the 16GB iPhone 5s and the Galaxy S4 — both vastly better devices in terms of their spec sheets.

It will see release on September 20th, with pre-orders opening on the 13th.
