Xiaomi Mi 5 could ditch Snapdragon for MediaTek

Xiaomi could be planning to jump ship for its upcoming Mi 5 due to royalty disputes with Qualcomm.

According to a Chinese website, Xiaomi are reportedly quite unhappy with Qualcomm wanting a cut for each Snapdragon 820 used in their upcoming Mi 5 flagship smartphone. So much in fact, that the company are seriously considering ditching the chipset altogether in favour of their competitor, MediaTek. This could wind up being one of their flagship Helio chipsets, which have made serious advancements over the past few years. The newest Helio X20 in particular has scored very well against competing flagships, outperforming the Exynos 7420 by a comfortable margin and destroying the Snapdragon 810.

Arguably, this could also make the Mi 5 somewhat cheaper as the MediaTek chipsets are generally cheaper to implement. This could be a win-win for everyone.
