The world’s first UFS memory cards have now been unveiled by Samsung, brushing aside the competition in spectacular fashion.

We’re all pretty familiar with microSD cards, particularly Android fans who love their microSD slots. When we think of generation jumps we usually think of smartphones, consoles and televisions. But now we’re seeing a generation jump in the memory card world, as Universal Flash Storage (UFS) makes it’s debut. The new cards will come in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Samsung are claiming speed that blow predecessors away, even the newly announced SanDisk cards.

How fast are world’s first UFS memory cards?

The new world’s first UFS memory cards have write speeds of up to 530MB per second, roughly five times faster that regular microSD cards. Watching a 1080p movie, saved on the UFS card, on your device, can be done in a mere 10 seconds. A UHS-1 microSD card can fully read a full HD movie in about 50 seconds.

Write speed is also blisteringly fast, capable of up to 170MB per second. It’s a lot faster compared to the recently announced SanDisk Pro, capable of  up to 100MB per second.

All of this newly created power is necessary according to Samsung, as we enter an age where 4K video is becoming prevalent, with new devices taking advantage of it. The following devices can take advantage of the new memory cards: DSLRs, 3D VR cameras, action cams and drones. All of which can take advantage of 4K video.

Samsung already employ UFS in the internal memory of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, this is the first time UFS is employed in an external capacity.

A release date and pricing is yet to be confirmed. The power found on these cards are eight times the recommended needed for normal consumers, whether consumers will actually see these cards is unclear.
