The Powermat, available as a home/office version (£70) or a portable version (£80) can charge three devices at once, by simply placing the device on the mat – after having fitted a Powermat receiver that substitutes the standard battery cover.

According to Powermat, some devices will charge quicker than when they’re plugged in to a standard wired charger. In addition, the Powermat only generates energy when a device is placed on the mat, boosting its green credentials. There’s also a USB slot to allow you to charge other devices the ‘normal’ way, using one of a range of optional tips to fit different mobile phones and gadgets.

To begin with, Powermat receivers are available for the following devices:

Apple iPhone, Apple iPod touch, Apple Dock (all £34.99 each), BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Curve 8900, 8300, 8310, 8320, 8330 & 8350i, BlackBerry Pearl 8110, 8120 & 8130, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi (all £29.99 each).

Powermat is working to increase the range of devices supported, while development is taking place to scale up the technology to work with higher power devices (such as laptops).
