WATCH: Israeli scientists have created a device which can fully charge a smartphone in 30 seconds

As exciting as the possible future of wireless charging is, unless they can expand its range to the size of a room then it will most likely remain a novelty for the time being. As it turns out, the  really exciting innovations in charging could still be in the wired field – and the StoreDot is proof.

The StoreDot is a little larger than the size of the power block on your average laptop charger. Created by scientists in Israel it can charge your phone from dead to full in just 30 seconds. It apparently uses nanodots – a new form of battery formed of biological semiconductors made of amino acids (we’ll take their word for it).

Incredibly, they reckon the device will be ready for retail as soon as 2016 for the price of just £20. It may not be the most portable thing in the world, but if it can fully charge your phone in half a minute do you really care? If it sounds too good to be true then check out the footage for yourself, as it charges a Samsung Galaxy S4. Watching the little battery gauge creep up is surprisingly hypnotic.
