E3 2014 may still be more than a week away, but some big news has been released early – a new Mortal Kombat game is coming. It’s called Mortal Kombat X and the first trailer has been released today. You can get excited now.

Series co-creator Ed Boone tweeted the big news earlier today, along with the trailer itself. Unfortunately, that trailer states that the game won’t be released until 2015. When it does arrive, it’ll be on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC.

That’s bad news, but on the plus side the trailer is so awesome that you can almost forgive them. We’re treated to a surprisingly lengthy fight between fan-favourites Sub-Zero and Scorpion in a dark, cold forest. Whilst it’s reasonable to presume that the footage isn’t taken from the in-game engine, there are a few clues as to what may feature when we finally do get to see it in action.

At one point Sub-Zero swings around an outstretched tree branch before kicking into Scorpion, which suggests we could see interactive environments in-game. Similarly, both characters knock one another through trees, which shatter and splinter as they fly through them – perhaps another hint at destructible, ‘Dead or Alive’ style stages.

We also see Sub-Zero rip a branch from a tree, freezing it into a weapon which he breaks across Scorpion’s face. Later on he draws an icy sword from the ground – could weapons play a part in Mortal Kombat X?

Whatever its features, if Mortal Kombat X is even half as good as 2011’s Mortal Kombat 9 we’ll be satisfied. Check out the (extremely graphic, NSFW) trailer at the top of the page.

UPDATE:  E3 went off big time on Monday, and sure enough we were treated to a little more of Mortal Kombat X. Well… more like a  lot more. You can watch over two and a half minutes of legitimate, next-gen (or should that be current-gen?) gameplay. What’s more, it involves the two new fighters. For now they remain nameless, but they certainly look interesting. One is a demon lady swarmed by bees, whilst the other is a crazed child riding atop a giant brute of a warrior. We’ve missed you, Mortal Kombat.

Oh, and of course there’s plenty of Sub-Zero and Scorpion smashing each other up, as well as some fatalities which are, as you’d expect,  ridiculously gory. So you know… viewer discretion and all that. Check it out below.
