iOS gains on Android in US market share

We reported on Windows Phone’s big advances in EU market share last week, but over in the US market share business it’s still all about Apple and Android.

ComScore’s latest quarterly report is out (below), showing the OS market share in the states after the months of June, July and August. In short, Apple is gaining on Android, even without the added results of the new iPhones (released in September). Android lost 0.8 percent of its 52.4 percent market share, taking it to 51.6 percent.

A minimal loss, sure, but it’s helped Apple catch up every so slightly, as iOS gained 1.5 percent market share heading from 39.2 to 40.7 percent ownership. BlackBerry didn’t fair so well, dropping from 4.8 percent to 4 percent. Hardly surprising, giving the company’s current issues, but again Microsoft has gained on this, with a tiny 0.2 percent increase. That takes the company from 3 percent to 3.2 percent. Maybe that’s not worth reporting – you decide.

There are now some 145 million smartphones now in use across the US market. Android obviously benefits from the sheer amount of phones that use its OS from the likes of Samsung to Sony, while iOS gets by on the strength of the iPhone brand alone. Other interesting stats include Facebook as the number one app, and Google sites as the most-used in web browser. Kind of unsurprising, that.

Expect the release of the iPhone 5c and 5s to help Apple gain even more steam, come next report.
