Toshiba unveils the first ever functioning camera module for Google’s Project Ara

Project Ara is quite possibly the most exciting programme in mobile technology right now, and it only gets more exciting the more we see of it. This latest update has presented us with the first ever working camera module for the device, courtesy of Toshiba.

We’ve seen a very early functioning prototype of Project Ara before, but not with a working camera. We also haven’t seen modules being hot-switched on the fly before, although it would makes sense that it’s easier to do this with a camera than with, say, a processor.

As well as the basic functioning module, Toshiba has also shown us what the final camera block will look like – a smooth, white oblong with a little bulge where the lens is and the familiar red Toshiba logo in the bottom left corner. It’s easy to imagine how unique every Project Ara handset will look should every component within it reflect the individual manufacturer’s brand so strongly.

Toshiba has actually shown two different cameras – one 5-megapixel and one 13-megapixel, which plays into the theme of Project Ara being entirely tailored to the user’s needs. Presumably the 5-megapixel snapper will be significantly cheaper than the 13-megapixel unit come release.

Rumours have been circulating that Google will be unveiling Project Ara officially at Mobile World Congress 2015 next month, so we’ll be sure to keep you updated should anything official be presented. Until then, take a look at the video below showcasing Toshiba’s new camera in action.
