Whilst it may not have been announced upon the range’s unveiling two months ago at Mobile World Congress, Sony has finally revealed the wireless charging kit for its Xperia Z2 line.
Both the Sony Xperia Z2 smartphone handset and the Sony Xperia Z2 tablet are already to buy in stores in the UK and other select international regions, so the timing seems a little off. We’re not going to argue though, as the wireless charging solution looks better than we ever thought it would.
Wireless charging (when not neatly incorporated within the device itself like in the Nokia Lumia range) usually brings to mind images of clunky, ungainly, or outright ugly cases. Hence our pleasant surprise at the Sony Wireless Charging Cover WCR12 and Sony Wireless Charging Plate WCH10 (the product might not be ugly, but the name sure is).
You simply slip your Xperia Z2 device into the sleek, slender black case and you’re all set. From then on, when you wish to charge it you just lay it on top of the pad, which connects to the mains power supply. The case for the Z2 tablet also doubles up as a foldable stand, which is nice, whilst the handset case also has a screen cover.
The charging pad itself is circular – 78mm in diameter and just 7.7mm deep. It has a small white LED on its side which blinks to let you know that your device is charging – upon reaching 100% the light turns solid.
Sony may have not yet announced a price, availability or even a release date yet, but that hasn’t stopped UK site Clove.co.uk from listing the products. The charging plate (available only in black) is priced at £54.99 and the Xperia Z2 handset case £69.99 (available in black or white). There’s no sign of the tablet case. Whilst the products are technically listed for sale, Clove says that it doesn’t expect them in stock until June.
