According to a report from DigiTimes, Sony and LG will follow Apple, Samsung and Huawei in developing their own processors for their handheld devices.

Sources say that due to the success Samsung and Huawei have had with their own in-house processors, Sony and also LG want to follow suit. Samsung enjoy a 24% share of the market and currently the biggest Android smartphone developer. Samsung dropped Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors in favour of it’s own Exynos range, that have proven to be excellent.

Sources stated:

“Since flagship models launched by Apple, Samsung and Huawei built using in-house developed application processors have allowed these vendors to ramp up earnings and market share, Sony Mobile and LG want to follow suit.”

It seems Sony want to play catchup to their rivals. The sources carry on to mention that development is already in motion.

“Taiwan-based IC design service provider Global Unichip reportedly has landed AP development orders from Asia-based handset vendors, indicating the emerging trend.”

If the rumours prove to be true and this trend spreads to other manufacturers, the likes of Qualcomm and Mediatek have some problems on the horizon.
