Snapchat still not heading to Apple Watch

At the recent Re/code Code Conference, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel said that the company considered developing a light version of Snapchat for the Apple Watch but back-peddled because it made little sense.

Questioned during the conference, Spiegel said “We ended up waiting to do Snapchat on the watch. Why would you look at a small picture [on your wrist] when you can look at a large one on your phone?”

While that doesn’t mean it’s not coming at all, it does indicate that Spiegel is not content with just mirroring the experience you currently get on your phone. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

Spiegel maintained that instead of moving to other platforms, the company will continue focus on its three-pronged strategy of: Camera and editing tools, Communications and Messaging, and Content. Part of this strategy could involve removal of the tap and hold UI, as Snapchat are keen to encourage longer videos and move to a more video-centric application focus.

Being that the Apple Watch has not been as well received as the company expected, it may be that their short-term priorities lay elsewhere. Nevertheless, don’t expect the Snapchat experience on your expensive timepiece anytime soon.
