After a serious delay, the flagship-killing OnePlus One will begin shipping today

Upon its reveal, the hype surrounding the OnePlus One was almost unbearable. It looked the part. And upon closer inspection, all the tech was in place for it to play the part, too. It was a genuine flagship-quality smartphone, at the price of a mid-range device. Mobile nerds the world over were rejoicing, and rightly so.

That is, until it became pretty clear that there was no real way to  actually buy it. Handsets were sold on an invitation-only basis, and even then a series of delays pushed back its shipping date farther and farther.

But now, it seems that the storm has finally passed. OnePlus has announced that the One will begin shipping as soon as today, with handsets then being dispatched continuously afterwards.

The major reason behind the latest delay was due to a fairly serious flaw in the One’s OpenSSL software. The CyanogenMod team, who have been working closely with OnePlus for the entirety of the project, acted as quickly as they could to fix it. And now it’s done.

The reason an OpenSSL flaw is so serious is for security reasons. You see, security vulnerabilities within OpenSSL are exactly where the infamous Heartbleed bug started when it began to terrorise a huge number of web pages earlier this year.

A software update was implemented and now the handsets are ready to go, so if you’re one of the lucky few with a standing order then your wait is almost over.
