The one mobile users will be most interested in is the Expanded format for Memory Stick Micro (M2) card, which takes the current M2 format and increases the capacity from a maximum of 32GB to 2TB. Read/write speeds of up to 20 megabytes per second will be possible.

A new Memory Stick HG Micro also offers an enhanced 8-bit parallel, 20 pin, interface to bring read/write speeds of up to 60 megabytes per second. The memory cards will be the same size as current M2 cards and retain backward compatibility.

Prices and availability are still unknown, and with no devices on the market to utilise the new cards at the moment – we don’t expect them to be on sale for a while yet. Nor do we expect anything to appear with much more than 32 or 64GB capacity in the short term.
