Samsung has confirmed it is building a watch, hot on the heels of reports of an Apple iWatch in the works.

The company’s executive vice president of mobile, Lee Young Hee, said in an interview with Bloomberg that they company had been preparing the “watch product” for a long time.

“We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”

No information was provided about what features the watch would have, its price or availability (Samsung are getting very good at this hype thing), Bloomberg reported.

The news follows recent reports from the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times citing Apple insiders as saying the company was experimenting with “wristwatch-like devices” which would perform smart phone functions.

Samsung’s efforts have also been rumoured prior to Lee’s confirmation, with reports that the device would possibly be called the Galaxy Altius with a 500x500p touch screen display.

Smart watches aren’t anything new but have yet to make the leap to proliferation that smart phones have.  Samsung and Apple were looking to this new market as the smart phone market reached saturation point, Bloomberg said.
