Sainsbury’s online ditching DVDs, books, games, going digital

Sainsbury’s online store is getting a bit of a shakeup, and will soon be ditching a lot of physical media, including books, games and even DVDs.

The supermarket giant will instead offer these things digitally. But, as CNET points out, there’s a bit of a hiccup in the movies department – HD videos are absent. That puts Sainsbury’s at a disadvantage up against Tesco’s Blinkbox. HD distribution is reportedly planned, but no solid date on when.

The change will come at the end of February 2014, when even the next-generation consoles will be taken down. Pre-orders for items launching before March 15th will also be honoured.

The company isn’t exactly the first we think of when it comes to online stores, but perhaps it will be able to beef up its appeal with this increased focused.
