Rumour Round Up: Watch it – Google enters smart watch stakes

Google, apparently, is working on a smart watch too.

I say ‘too’, because the watch rumours have just about every manufacturer working on a watch with smart phone capabilities. And when I say every, I mean possibly two others.

At any rate, the Financial Times reports that Google’s Android unit is developing a smart watch.

Google smart watch rumours are nothing new – Business Insider reported the conglomerate’s interest back in January, and pointed to a patent obtained by Google in October 2011 for a smart watch with a flip up display.

The Google offering was apparently separate from Samsung’s recently confirmed effort and the Verge reported that Google would be better set up in terms of its software expertise to build something more than a low spec smartphone on a strap.

Watch me now

The news that Google might be considering a smart watch of its own follows the recent confirmation by Samsung executive vice president of mobile Lee Young Hee that the company had been preparing a “watch product” for some time.

“We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”

And of course, Apple has been reported by both the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times to be working on its own iWatch, a rumour that’s been around since 2011 but is now backed by both news sources.
