RIM has today launched its new BlackBerry device, the Curve 9360, which could be the model that sells in the highest numbers thanks to the interest it’s sure to get from 16-25 year old BBM addicts.
The new, thinner, Curve 9360 introduces BlackBerry OS 7 to a new audience and has also had its specifications updated to add NFC (Near-Field Communication), while the camera is boosted to 5-megapixels with autofocus and LED flash.
With NFC not just about smart payments (something that could still be some way off becoming viable due to arguments between networks and banks), it’s likely that the youth market will help ensure the success of other NFC features like reading smart tags on posters and at events, or quickly pairing with NFC-enabled accessories.
BlackBerry OS 7 also gives many core applications, like Facebook, Twitter and BBM, updates that make them faster, as well as including new features – like adding a social networking element to BBM. Users can now share what apps they’re using with friends, or upload photos quicker to Facebook.
Other features, like the powerful 800MHz processor, make this the most powerful Curve ever – and a big leap from both the 8520 and 9300. But it’s the 246DPI (480×320 pixel) display, which doesn’t have touch in case you’re wondering, and the awesome design that will have this becoming the phone of choice. At just 11m thick (60x109x11mm to be precise), the phone has to be held to fully appreciate how far on the Curve has moved on.
The Curve 9360 also has 3G/HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS, plus a microSDHC card slot to expand memory by up to 32GB.
It should be released shortly on all UK networks, with Vodafone and Three so far already confirming they’ve added it to their line-up. A price is yet to be confirmed.
