Runcom uses OFDMA (that’s Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access if you really care) technology, developed for WiMAX and LTE. However, it can also work as a normal GSM mobile phone too.
The Quantum phone is capable of normal circuit switched voice calls, VoIP and high speed data connections of up to 10Mbps over WiMAX.
The WiMAX Forum claims there will be 800 million users covered by 2010, although we’re still unsure if it will ever make a real dent into the ground gained by existing 2G and 3G services.
The phone is due for delivery in Q3.
