Opt-out of cold calls with a text message

Ofcom are partnering with The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) to launch a new service to make it illegal to cold call you.

The new “text-to-register” service is an attempt by Ofcom and TPS to cease those annoying, persistent, rage inducing phone calls we seem to be getting on a weekly basis in the UK. In the What Mobile office we have a resident impressionist who practiced a new persona whenever PPI came calling. This did not deter them sadly.

How to do it

What might deter them is the new “text-to-register” scheme. Simply text ‘TPS’ and your email address to 78070. Do not worry if your device is prompting that it may incur a charge, the text is free. You should be sent a confirmation text, although we’ve yet to receive ours.

Registering with TPS will make it completely illegal for companies to contact you without consent. After confirmation you should start to see gradual reduction in sales and marketing calls, the service can take 28 days to take effect according to Ofcom.

The service provided by TPS isn’t anything new, it has been here all along with only 48% of people knowing the service is just exclusive to landlines. Only 2.9 million mobile phones (3%) are currently registered to the service.

As for our resident impressionist, he’s going to have to practice in Starbucks.
