O2 has signed up for Virgin Media’s Underground WiFi service, available for customers from June.

The service launched in June last year and free WiFi was on offer throughout 2012 on the London Underground via Virgin Media.

This year, the company’s WiFi portal was open to all Tube passengers, with Travel for London updates and news.

But Vodafone and Everything Everywhere including Orange and T-Mobile  signed up in November to allow eligible customers full WiFi access across connected stations at no extra cost to pricing plans, and Virgin Media customers had full access also, while those not signed up with one of these providers could purchase a daily, weekly or monthly Virgin Media WiFi pass.

Now O2 has jumped onboard, signing up as a wholesale partner for Virgin Media’s WiFi service from June.

All existing O2 customers signed up to O2 Wifi would be automatically registered for free WiFi on the Undeground, O2 said.

Virgin Media had confirmed a further 12 Tube stations were due to come online this week including Earl’s Court and Bank, Mobile News reported.

This meant 120 stations were WiFi enabled, meeting the target set by Virgin Media and TfL when the service launched last year.

O2 head of consumer Gary Booker said the company was excited to bring free Wifi on the underground to O2 customers this summer.

“Our customers want to stay connected wherever they are and will soon be able to check their email, update their Facebook status, shop online, book their next holiday and stay connected to their friends and family right across Tube stations in Central London.”
