Nokia World 09: NAVTEQ Traffic to get data from Nokia phones

The technology is still in the early stages, but offering a similar service to TomTom’s HD Traffic, Nokia GPS data will help provide information for a new ‘Traffic Patterns’ service that can provide more accurate route planning, with information on historic, and therefore likely, traffic conditions.

By the end of 2009, data will be collected over mobile networks to provide an up-to-the-minute solution for satellite navigation devices using NAVTEQ Traffic.

Nokia GPS data will be collected from millions of Nokia handsets, allowing improved traffic information on smaller roads, which are not usually covered by traditional traffic monitoring and reporting services.
