Nintendo is finally making smartphone games

Brace yourselves – the news all gaming fans have been waiting (begging) for has finally arrived. Nintendo is to begin making games for mobile.

Games. On your mobile phone. Made by the most iconic house in the videogames industry. It almost sounds too good to be true.

…In fact it is. Sort of. The truth of the matter is, unfortunately, not quite as black-and-white as ‘there’s going to be a Mario game on your Samsung’.

Nintendo recently struck a development partnership with DeNA, a Japanese company specialising in mobile gaming platforms.

Upon announcing this deal, Nintendo stated that “only new original games optimised for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system.”

Still, at the same time it’s been made clear that DeNA will have full access to all Nintendo creative licenses and properties. So, sure, you probably won’t get an HD remake of Super Mario Bros., but that’s not to say the Italian pipe-diving duo won’t be showing up at some point.

As a part of the deal Nintendo now holds a 10% stake in DeNA, whilst DeNA will be purchasing a 1.24% share of Nintendo.

For now, then, we have to play the waiting game. If you’re impatient though, there are certain… other ways for you to play Nintendo games on your mobile. But you didn’t hear it from us.
