Nintendo Direct – New Zelda is not what you think, more

Nintendo has announced its newest Zelda game for Wii U, but it’s probably not what you were expecting.

The company made a whole host of announcements during its Nintendo Direct live stream event yesterday, but the opening reveal of Hyrule Warriors undoubtedly stole the show.

It’s just a codename for now, but Warriors links this latest Zelda to the Dynasty Warriors series from Koei. It’s a rather insane-looking mesh of the two franchises, in which Zelda protagonist Link fights huge scores of enemies on the fields of the series’ fictional setting, Hyrule. Other than a trailer (seen above), we don’t have much information on the game, but it’s undoubtedly one of the most surprising announcements the company has made in a while.

But it wasn’t the only thing the big N had to announce. Rosalina, a character from the Super Mario Galaxy series, will also be making her way into Super Smash Bros, the cross-over fighting game that stars Nintendo icons. There was also another look at the upcoming Mario Kart 8 on Wii U as well as Yoshi’s New Island on 3DS.

Whole new titles were also announced, including NES Remix on the eStore. This inventive little title revisits past classics from the company’s first system and mixes things up to give you new challenges and leader boards to compete on. Also coming is Dr Luigi, a remix of the Dr Mario puzzler. That’s out this month in the US and next month in Europe.

Quite an exciting day for Nintendo fans and gamers alike, then. The Wii U may be struggling to sell, but it’s clear that the company is completely dedicated to supporting the platform in hopes that more units will shift soon.
