Microsoft’s IFA pre-show event was all about affordable Nokia devices with solid cameras.

The first of the two new handsets it revealed at the event was its flagship doppelganger; the Nokia Lumia 830.

The phone’s 5 inch display, metal-framed edges and colourful back covers resemble the design of the high-end  Lumia 930. Elsewhere, it has noticeable differences.

The new Nokia handset’s specs are mid-range compared to its flagship counterpart. According to Microsoft, the Lumia 830 – which will retail for roughly £240 – is the cheapest Nokia to contain its ‘Pureview’ image optical stabilisation technology.

The biggest cutback comes in the form of its 1.2 GHz processor. Consequently, that equals a considerable step down from the Lumia 930’s 2.2 GHz quad-core chip.

On top of that, the 10MP camera on the phone has been cut down drastically from the 930‘s 20.7MP snapper.

Still, the Pureview technology on the 830 – and a Zeiss lens – means it could turn out to be a solid all-round camera.

The 830 will also come with the latest Lumia camera software, version 5.0, out of the box. Not only does the software upgrade bring with it 4K video recording, but it will also allow users to hold the camera button to shoot videos – ideal for those decisive moments. Another new camera feature rolling out with the update will be a HDR mode – which was previously amiss from Lumia handsets.

Additionally, the 720p display resolution has also received a downgrade compared to the full HD display on the 930.

The Nokia Lumia 830 will be the first Microsoft handset to receive the newest update to Windows Phone 8.1 – codenamed Denim. New features rolling out with the upgrade include the ability to put live tiles in folders and the debut of Microsoft’s digital voice assistant, Cortana, in the UK and China.

Therefore, if you’re a fan of Windows Phone and the Lumia 930’s camera functions but dislike its £419.95 price tag, then the £240 Lumia 830 could be the device for you. Just don’t go in expecting the same specs. Check out some additional images of the new Nokia below:
