New Angry Birds game, Angry Birds Epic, set to hit iOS App Store and Google Play store June 12th

We’ve finally got a release date for the latest, brand new instalment in the wildly popular Angry Birds franchise. Angry Birds Epic will be arriving on iOS and Android on June 12th.

If you’ve managed to miss the reveal and build-up to this title so far, then you may be in for a bit of a surprise. Epic is set in the Angry Birds universe, sure, but it couldn’t get much further from the original in terms of genre.

Angry Birds Epic is Rovio’s own bizarre take on, of all things, a turn-based RPG. You lead your band of merry (not literally, they’re still very angry) birds through their magical world battling evil pigs, only this time you’re using spells and swords rather than a slingshot.

As you’d probably expect, it actually looks like rather a lot of fun. The hybrid of incredibly successful, suitable-for-all-ages franchise and accessible RPG should appeal to a wide variety of gamers – plus, it’s free-to-play, so that probably won’t hurt its chances. As long as in-app-purchases are handled as delicately as they are in the original Angry Birds title then it should be fine.

Check out the trailer below to see what’s in store.

UPDATE:  The game is out on app stores now, and what’s more you can listen to the official soundtrack to the game via music streaming service Deezer. Don’t ask us why you’d want to, but it’s nice to have the option we suppose. Check it out here.
