Netflix movies could be on the table

We all know Netflix as one of the top video streaming apps. Earlier in the year we saw the company try its hand at original programming with the launch of House of Cards and the return of Arrested Development. The experiment seems successful so far, and now the company may be looking to expand to Netflix movies.

According to All Things D, Netflix content boss Ted Sarandos has said that feature films could be where the company heads next. During an investors call Sarandos he told listeners to keep an open mind to the idea.

Then this weekend, during a speech, he noted: “What we’re trying to do for TV, the model should extend pretty nicely to movies. Meaning, why not premiere movies on Netflix, the same day they’re opening in theaters? And not little movies – there’s a lot of ways, and lot of people to do that [already]. Why not big movies? Why not follow the consumers’ desire to watch things when they want?”

But is a straight to streaming format what people will want from film? Wouldn’t it also spell the end of cinema?

We’re likely a long way off from this sort of thing happening. Netflix movies could mean a big shift in the way we watch new films.
