Biting your nails over the next boss of Windows? You can relax for a bit – Microsoft will find its next CEO in early 2014, that company has announced.

The outfit had hoped to have its replacement for the outgoing Steve Ballmer by the end of this year, but with time running out it’s admitted it will take a bit longer. Board member John W. Thompson admitted as much in a recent blog post, stating: “We identified over 100 possible candidates, talked with several dozen, and then focused our energy intensely on a group of about 20 individuals, all extremely impressive in their own right. As you would expect, as this group has narrowed, we’ve done deeper research and investigation, including with the full Board. We’re moving ahead well, and I expect we’ll complete our work in the early part of 2014.”

The candidates for the top spot have been whittled down to just five potentials. Among them is former Nokia boss Stephen Elop, although recent reports have suggested that he may not be as popular a choice as some of the others in the running right now.

Microsoft will undoubtedly be carrying out rigorous interviews and assessments on each candidate. That’s not going to make for a pretty Christmas period for any of them.
