Meizu has just announced an Ubuntu variant of their speedy Pro 5 handset.
Chinese smartphone manufacturer Meizu has a habit of producing ludicrously powerful handsets for a fraction of the price and the MX4 was arguably the pinnacle of their line-up. Today, the company has announced an “Ubuntu Edition” of the Pro 5, which boasts the best hardware currently seen in a device running the operating system.
The device comes with a 5.7-inch panel that has razor thin bezels, a 1080p AMOLED display and a fingerprint sensor built into the home button. The processor is a powerful Exynos 7420; the same chip found in Samsung’s excellent S6 series. RAM is either 3GB or 4GB, depending on the memory option you choose (the larger variant having more RAM). The rear camera is a large 21 megapixels, likely using Sony’s new IMX230 sensor. The front camera is 5 megapixels, a nice high number for those selfies and video calls. This is all powered by a large 3050mAh battery, that can be topped up quite comfortably using Meizu’s own fast charging technology “mCharge”.
Obviously, if you’re thinking this device sounds quite familiar… That’s probably because it is. The internals are exactly the same as the Android Pro 5, which is no bad thing. Pre-orders begin on Monday during Mobile World Congress, where we should hopefully get to see more of the handset in the flesh.
