Samsung has officially revealed its first Tizen smartphone, the Samsung Z, to be launched in Russia in the third quarter of 2014.

The Korean manufacturer also stated that the new handset would be launched in other markets later this year.

Samsung claims that the device  boasts a better scrolling experience and improved rendering performance for web browsing. It also touts its Tizen smartphone as offering a faster startup time and more efficient multi-tasking capabilities, while an Ultra Power Saving Mode will let you operate the phone even at minimal battery levels.

Other than being equipped with the new Linux-based mobile operating system, the Samsung Z comes with a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display and is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core processor and a 2600mAh battery. It also comes with a built-in fingerprint sensor, which Samsung first introduced in its Galaxy S5 flagship. The Samsung Z has an eight-megapixel rear camera and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, while it also supports 2D and 3D graphics.

As Galaxy Gear owners, and those in possession of Samsung’s latest Gear range know, the firm’s wearables were its first Tizen-based products. However, the company has grand plans for the fledgling OS. According to a Samsung executive,  Tizen devices could account for as much as 15 percent of Samsung’s mobile shipments per year, but Android will still be its main business.

Many believe that seeing the OS go up against rival smartphone operating systems such as iOS, Android and Windows Phone will be the first true test of its chances of success.
