LG has officially announced the G3 Beat, a new mid-range version of its flagship LG G3 smartphone with a smaller screen.

The Beat’s 5 inch screen hardly makes it a compact device, but elsewhere the handset has been considerably downgraded – in terms of specs – from its older sibling; the LG G3.

The new device runs Android KitKat and comes packing a modest 1.2GHz quad-core process, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage. Overall, it delivers half the power of the LG G3.

In terms of features, the Beat’s rear-facing camera is 8 megapixels and the front-facing snapper is 1.3MP.

It does, however, retain the LG G3’s immaculate camera functions, including laser auto-focus, touch and shoot and gesture shots. Additional features it inherits from the G3 are its smart keyboard and QuickMemo+.

The device will be available in a range of colours, including metallic black, silk white and shine gold. It will be available in LG’s domestic market of Korea first, as of tomorrow.

Europe and Russia will receive the handset a few “weeks” later under the title of the LG G3s. It will roll out worldwide thereafter.

Pricing for the LG G3 Beat has yet to be revealed.
