It’s a glorious day for Amazon fans, as the 8.9 inch version of the Kindle Fire HDX is shipping today.
The new, bigger version of the popular e-reader/tablet runs Fire OS 3.0, codenamed Mojito. Methinks Amazon needs to take a page from the book of Android with its OS naming. It comes with all the usual Wi-Fi bells and camera whistles, weighing just 374 grams. That makes it 34 percent lighter than the last generation tablet.
There’s also a 1080p display, ideal for all the Amazon viewing apps like LoveFilm and X-Ray, a service that includes movie and TV trivia as you watch. With 11 hours of mixed use battery and 17 hours of reading time it’s got a nice amount of battery life too.
The Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is shipping now, starting at £329 for a Wi-Fi only, 16GB model that has adverts (or ‘special offers’) installed. It’s available for £369 at 32GB and £409 for 64GB, although removing the ads and adding Vodafone 4G/3G will cost you a fair bit more. You can pick up the thing from Amazon direct.
