iOS 8.3 update adds Spock emoji

We told you last week (April 9) that the latest iOS 8.3 update includes more ethnically diverse emojis. Now iPhone users with the update, and OS X 10.10.3 users, can message their contacts with a secret emoji that references Star Trek’s Spock.

  • You need to update your iPhone to iOS 8.3 and then copy the emoji from here using your iPhone or iPad. Unfortunately, Android and Windows users won’t be able to see the emoji and it will just look like a square block.
  • After copying the Spock emoji, head to your device’s Settings menu.
  • Go to General, Keyboards and then click Shortcuts.
  • Click the + button.
  • Double click on Phrase and paste the Vulcan emoji from earlier.
  • Enter a shortcut you’d like to use for the emoji.
  • Then just save it.

Seeing the Spock emoji

You can now send the emoji on your iPhone or iPad. The emoji will only be visible to iOS users with iOS 8.3, however.
