Facebook for Windows 8.1 arrives ahead of schedule

It has been an app that everyone has been asking for, but Facebook for Windows 8.1 is now officially available in the Windows Store.

As of today, you’ll be able to peruse your Facebook Wall without the need to use a third-party solution or using the Facebook website on either a Windows 8 PC or Windows RT-based tablet.

If you’re expecting anything majorly different with the Facebook for Windows 8.1 app over other platforms, then you may be disappointing. A lot of what is on show here is all what we’ve seen before.

There’s still a space for your News Feed, chat, notifications and much more — but some features are reliant on the Windows 8.1 operating system. The app will work with the Share button in the Charms menu, which means you can send photos and much more directly from Facebook to other apps, such as the email. Snapping Facebook to the side is also relatively easy, although it will only work at 40 percent of the screen minimum.

Some users may have to wait until later today before they can download the update for themselves, with the app only working on Windows 8.1 — meaning Windows 8 and Windows RT users will be left out in the cold until the update rolls out. If you’re in the UK then you should expect to see the update go live at around 12pm, which translates at around 7am on the East Coast and 4am on the West Coast.
