EU considering scrapping roaming charges, call home pay no extra

The EU has a disdain for roaming charges, and we’ve known that since 2010, when the European Commission set a target for scrapping all charges by 2015.

It has already made steps towards that goal, gradually capping the prices of roaming across Europe, but now the Guardian is reporting that it’s ready to make good on its goals.

According to the Guardian’s sources, the European Commission has plans to unveil the changes as early as next week, with a cut off deadline of July 2014 for anyone who doesn’t abolish their roaming fees.

The Commission wants those Networks who don’t sign up to the plans to give customers a choice of foreign providers, meaning you’re not stuck with the one your mobile network struck a deal with — and without the need to change SIM cards or phone numbers.

UK network operator Three has already made steps to reduce roaming charges for its customers, although it’s not just doing so in the EU.
