British teenager Luke Bannister won £250,000 in the inaugural World Drone Prix in Dubai.

The 15-year old piloted his drone along an outdoor track with a camera mounted on his drone. Bannister had to traverse through illuminated hoops, beating out 150 other competing teams.

Drone racing has started to rise in popularity with Dubai’s World Drone Prix being the biggest ever drone racing event with a prize pool of $1 million. Luke Bannister’s team, Tornado X-Blades Banni-UK, clinched the title, beating homegrown team Dubai Dronetek. drone racing has seen investments from NFL team owners and is still in its infancy, there’s a still  long way to go before it breaks into the mainstream.

It’s evident in the coverage of the event itself. Watching a race live won’t be as exciting as looking through the drone itself, as the pilots do using special headsets for a first person view. Captured footage of the event can be seen in the provided video. It’s quite a nauseating experience for those who experience motion sickness and quite irritating to the ears with the constant buzzing. But Bannister’s skills are evident here, displaying his skill in what looks to be an impressive win.
