Another day, another Apple iPhone 7 headphone jack removal story. Cirrus Logic Inc, semiconductor supplier specialising in DSP circuits, has announced that they will be building development kits for Apple’s upcoming headphone-less iPhone 7.

The MFi headset development kit will include a Hi-Fi DAC capable of up to 35 watts of power, plus an 3.5mm audio jack and microphone connector. This should allow owners of their existing headphones the chance to still use them, albeit with a huge audio converter sticking out the bottom of your iPhone 7.

Apple iPhone 7 headphone jack removal could still be a reality

While there has been leaks surrounding the prospect of other developers releasing 3.5 to Lightning connectors, this is the first time we’ve officially seen one in the flesh. Apple controls the manufacture of Lightning adapters and other accessories through its Made for iPhone (MFi) program, which licenses and approves third-party accessories designed to work with Apple iPhone products. It would seem that the Cirrus Logic headset development kit has passed through intact.

While this doesn’t guarantee that an Apple iPhone 7 headphone jack removal is going to happen, it does show that developers and manufacturers are preparing for the eventuality, proving that nobody outside of Apple really has a clue.
