Four new devices and HomePod speaker announced at today’s event

Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 12 at its worldwide streaming event today.

The US smartphone vendor gave viewers a first look at its flagship device which will feature a 6.1-inch screen and a Super Retina XDR display. Apple says the device is 11 per cent thinner and 16 per cent lighter than last years’ iPhone 11 and will feature a ceramic shield making it the most durable iPhone yet.

The iPhone 12 is powered by the A14 Bionic chipset which is the most powerful the company has produced so far. Apple says the chipset will enable the highest quality gaming ever on an iPhone and showcased the forthcoming League of Legends as an example.

The camera features a 12MP ultra-wide lens and a 12MP wide lens with Night Mode extending to all camera modes on the device. The camera also has a seven-element lens that will improve its low-light performance by 27 per cent.

The iPhone 12 also features MagSafe – a new feature that allows the iPhone to magnetically attach to chargers, wallets, and other accessories and also enables fast-charging capabilities. The MagSafe is USB-C compatible and the vendor will not include lightning cables or earphones with new devices.

The smartphone represents Apple’s first venture into 5G and telecoms analyst at PP Foresight Paolo Pescatore thinks Apple can kickstart consumer demand for 5G

He said: “Everyone waits with bated breath for the new iPhone. More so now as telcos are heavily reliant on Apple and have been preparing their networks for the first iPhone 5G.

“People are now more conscious than ever and want the best connections, devices, and services at an affordable price.

“These new generations represent a window of opportunity to drive uptake and sway customers from rival platforms and devices.”

“Apple will sell millions of the new iPhone 5G devices.”

iPhone 12 Mini

Apple also revealed a first official look at the heavily rumoured iPhone 12 Mini which includes all of the same features as the iPhone 12 but has a 5.4-inch display.

The device is the smallest and lightest 5G device currently available on the market.

A full list of specs can be found below:

The iPhone 12 mini will be available for £699 and the iPhone 12 will retail for £799.

iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max represent slightly more advanced variants of Apple’s latest flagship device.

The iPhone 12 Pro will feature a 6.1-inch screen and the Max version of the device has a 6.7-inch screen.

Both models will feature the A14 Bionic chipset and will include a LIDAR scanner which helps increase focus in low-light situations. The camera on both devices is set to be slightly more impressive with the inclusion of a 12MP telephote with a 65mm focal length lens.

The devices will also be available in different colours to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. Pacific blue, gold, graphite, and Silver were the colours Apple announced the devices would be available in.

Apple also revealed the new Apple ProRaw feature which will offer existing benefits like Deep Fusion and Smart HDR video recording to both devices.

The iPhone 12 Pro will retail from £999 with the iPhone 12 Pro Max slightly more expensive at £1,099.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro can be pre-ordered on October 16 and are available on October 23.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Mini can be pre-ordered from November 6 and will be available on November 13.

HomePod Mini

Apple opened the event with an unveiling of its new speaker – the HomePod Mini.

The speaker is created from a mesh fabric and has an intercom feature that will allow members of one household to communicate via different devices.

IDC associate vice president of devices Francisco Jeronimo said: “Apple’s new Home Pod Mini, priced at $99, is something Apple has needed for some time, as it will help it improve its presence in the smart speaker category, where it holds only 1% of the market.

“Despite the lower pricing, it’s still more expensive than the regular versions of Google and Amazon smart speakers, and twice as expensive as their mini versions. However, it will appeal to Apple customers looking for a premium audio quality speaker at an affordable price.”

The HomePod Mini will be released on November 6 and will cost £99.
