Apple continues its crusade against the SIM card

A new report suggests that Apple and Samsung could be planning a rollout of embedded SIM technology, giving users the opportunity to use multiple networks at once.

It’s no secret that SIM cards are pretty lame. They lock us into a network and are entirely inflexible. We’ve known for a while that Apple wants to kill them, this was obvious when they released the Apple SIM for the iPad devices. Now, it seems that Samsung has also joined in the race and will be attempting to do the same thing. The Financial Times has reported that both companies are close to signing a deal with the GSMA, an association responsible for mobile telecoms within the UK. The deal could see a rollout of a standardised e-SIM model which will be embedded into all next generation devices, potentially killing the current mobile model. With an e-SIM, it would be possible to easily switch networks and even use multiple networks at once.
