To help security-conscious families, Swann is providing top tips for keeping your home and family safe this winter.

With darker evenings rolling in and the clocks going back from Sunday, burglaries are expected to spike by one third according to the latest figures*. Darker nights clearly mean a greater need for home security, especially when you are not at home. Swann, the global leader in DIY security, shares their top six security tips to protect your home and family throughout the winter months.

1. Get to know your neighbours

Keep an eye out for one another and notify the police if you see something suspicious. An easy way to keep everyone in the loop is to create a WhatsApp, WeChat or Facebook Messenger group. Using messaging apps, neighbours can post anything of concern and keep an eye on the neighbourhood.

2. Minimise your online presence

Try to avoid posting personal information which may make you a target, e.g. where you live and when you are going abroad, on social media platforms. Opportunistic thieves are becoming increasingly savvy and some will target you via social media, so protect yourself and your family by minimising your digital footprint.

3. Install a home security system

Cameras and surveillance systems are the number one deterrent for potential burglars. Swann’s smart security systems now have the ability to detect faces and alert your smartphone, so you can always know what’s going on at home and be notified if anything unusual occurs.

4. Lock windows and doors

Modern smart locks allow you to remotely check and lock your doors when you’re not home, for that extra peace of mind.

5. Keep your phone, wallet and keys near you

Burglars will target your personal items, so keep your phone, wallet and keys close to you at night. This will also allow you to call the police faster, should there be a break in.

6. Make it look like you’re home, even when you’re not

Burglars look to target empty homes, so making your house look lived in is important. Also using smart plugs to remotely turn on or off lamps and TV’s in the house, is an energy efficient way to out-smart potential thieves.
