Facebook enhances mobile application; launches deals

Following somewhat unrealistic suggestions on the web that Facebook was about to launch its own mobile phone, the social networking service announced a number of updates for mobile users.

Facebook now has over 200 million users accessing Facebook from a mobile phone, so it’s a logical step to further develop the mobile Facebook applications, including enhancements to the ‘Places’ location sharing service.

With immediate effect, Android and iPhone users can download updated Facebook apps, with Android users now getting access to Places and Groups (with improved notifications and updates), while iPhone users now get the addition of Groups, having already received Places earlier in the year.

Places has been updated to allow you to add photos when you check-in, and tag friends quicker with favourites that save time searching and scrolling.

Facebook also announced ‘Deals’ for Places, giving offers from nearby businesses when using Facebook on the move and allowing users to share offers with friends. The service is currently available to US users only.

Finally, Facebook is introducing a single sign-on feature for compatible applications, allowing you to login to Facebook once and then get access to other apps on your phone without having to re-enter your username or password.
