The British Academy Games Awards have been announced with The Walking Dead taking out the top spot for mobile.

The episodic game, the Walking Dead by Telltale Games, picked up the Best Mobile and Handheld game award.

It was up against fellow nominees Incoboto, LittleBigPlanet (Vita), New Star Soccer, The Room and Super Monsters Ate My Condo.

The game is based upon the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, with artwork inspired by that of the books.  With five episodes to buy, you play as Lee Everett, who must protect the orphan girl Clementine in order to redeem himself in a world of undead (who are walking, I’m not sure if you picked that up. Also biting, eating the living and generally bringing everyone down).

Billed as a game of lasting consequences (“tailored” play) and fast decisions, and not just a shoot ’em up, The Walking Dead also picked up the BAFTA for story, up against heavy weights like Mass Effect 3 and Far Cry 3.

Best of Britain

Best mobile game nominee the Room picked up Best British game.

The puzzler game (wrapped in a riddle, smothered in an enigma with some mystery sauce poured on top) was developed by Fireproof Games.

The development team said the ‘down the rabbit hole’ aspect of the game evolved from the iPad itself, with the touchscreen made to focus on an object and delve deeper.

Easter eggs in the form of semi-hidden achievements were an element also.

“You want to have that ‘Eureka’ moment where suddenly everything clicks and it flows really nicely, you solve a few puzzles in a row and then you get stuck again; that’s really what we’re looking for.”

Also on the mobile front,  New Star Soccer picked up best Fitness game, fighting off FIFA 13 and Nike + Kinect Training.
