TomTom START goes for entry level SatNav market

The TomTom START has a simplified menu with just two key icons on the main screen; ‘Plan Route’ and ‘Browse Map’. The lightweight unit (128g) has a 3.5-inch display and a semi-fixed ‘EasyPort’ mount for the windscreen that folds into the back of the device.

A loud speaker ensures you won’t miss voice instructions.

Despite the low price (£120 with a single region or £140 for Europe), the START still offers IQ Routes technology – which calculates different routes depending on the time of day and day of week – and Map Share technology, where TomTom users can make near real-time corrections that are updated when you plug the unit into your PC.

The latest map guarantee ensures you’ll always get the latest map, even if you buy a unit that has been in a shop for months (although at this price, we reckon they’ll be flying out of the door rather quickly!).

If you don’t like the standard colours, TomTom has introduced a series of clip-on covers for £15 each to give the START a new look. Other accessories include a carry case (£20) and home/car chargers.
