Ofcom releases 3G coverage maps for UK

July 8th 2009

Posted by: Jonathan Morris

Ofcom, the industry regulator, has released coverage maps for the 3G mobile phone network in the UK, using data supplied by each mobile operator in January 2009.

According to our sister site, Mobile News, the maps show a vast difference for each mobile operator - clearly showing Orange and 3 far out in front. O2 appears concentrated in south and west England, while T-Mobile and Vodafone appear to have intermittent 3G coverage within central, south and west England. 3G from all networks appears poorly represented in Scotland and northern England.

Ofcom has released the maps to help facilitate better mobile coverage across the country, by highlighting the areas that need additional coverage - including key transport routes.

They are not of a suitable resolution to enable detailed local coverage checks or access to services, but serve as a guide that helps give a general overview.

The regulator will continue to monitor competition between mobile networks.
